Many people possess fond childhood memories of afternoons spent lounging around public libraries, and oftentimes receiving one’s first library card was a rite of passage of sorts. “Expired”, a new photo series by San Francisco-based photographer Kerry Mansfield, plays on this nostalgia with its depictions of time-weathered library books and the now rather obsolete check-out cards. Mansfield photographed over 180 books for the series, which ultimately produced 175 images (73 of which are available in a book). The artist says that the idea for the project was spun in part from her own pleasant experiences in school libraries as a child, musing poetically in reference to check-out cards,
The photo series expresses this sense of history and commonality through its portrayal of books that have obviously been in circulation for quite a while and also through the use of titles that are cherished by many readers—for example, a torn copy of the children’s book classic, The Little Prince.
According to the biography on Mansfield’s personal website, her work
It makes sense, then, that “Expired” has so much to do with the passage of time. The pictures, shot against a black background, feature books with a wide variety of origins. The titles pictured came from locations all across the country, from Ashland, Ohio to Beverly Hills.
Of the process behind making the series, Mansfield writes,

Whether it be, to name a few, the influencers we watch/scroll past in an app, the abundance of the term in the media and online, or even conversations with friends about next person that they should “definitely start to follow”, it has reached a height of popularity that we couldn’t have fathomed a few years ago. Unfortunately with popularity, comes congestion, as everyone in their brother tries to get in on the influencing game. And that is one reason, the Josh Ostrovksy aka The Fat Jewish (a popular online personality that you probably follow) thinks that the golden years of influencing will soon be coming to a halt. He recently told CNN that he thinks that:
And if you are thinking, well who is this guy to say, just know he has 10 million follows and has made a nice life for himself with his influencer money–so he might know a thing or two about it. And though people are still mostly excited about social media (more money is being poured into then ever before), eventually, people are going to get over it. And according to Ostrovsky, that has already happened:
Of course, he could be wrong, but logically, there seems to be some truth to what he is saying. Whether influencing is or isn’t coming to an end, there is no doubt that things will have to taper off as there is no way social media can sustain the upward trajectory that it has been on since our thumbs first started sliding across our screen. If you are in the dark about it, it is Instagram’s long form video service that lets users post content up to an hour long (which you can view in a stand alone app or on the original app). Videos, influencers, content creators–sounds a lot like another popular platform know as Youtube (you may have heard of it). Naturally, the media pitted the two against each other. And considering the fact that Instagram basically runs the world right now, Youtube probably has reason to be a little bit afraid. They, however, haven’t made any announcements about how they are sitting there, quivering in their little boots. Well, as it turns out, when businesses have fierce competition they are worried about, they usually don’t right out and say it–who would have thought? Instead, they just do some influencing of their own and pull out the checkbook. According to Business Insider, Youtube has been throwing down the dough to keep creators from sharing their new content exclusively to IGTV. The payouts are said to be around the five- and six-figure mark, with the top creators even crossing the $1 million threshold. Though some of the creators are bound to Youtube exclusively, others are not. For them, in exchange for the money, they are uploading their new content to Youtube before they are posting to other platforms–or in some cases, at the same time. The number of stars that have been offered deals is not yet known. Youtube, however, in the same report, shrugged it off when pressed by Business Insider.
Youtube is acting all calm, cool and collected. Instagram now has hit 1 billion monthly users and following a profile in the main app automatically follows them on IGTV. They know this! Out of the spotlight, behind doors, if they had a physical brow to wipe, the back of their hand would come away from their forehead slick with sweat–at least that is what I like to picture. In all seriousness, they probably were already investing in their creators prior, but now, the checks have gotten bigger and there are more pockets to try and fill. We can only wait and see how it plays out.

Hopper HQ, an Instagram scheduling tool, has just released their 2018 Instagram Rich List and no matter how you feel about it, it is safe to say that, with the amount of money to be had through the medium, influencing is here to stay. Kylie Jenner topped the list with a hefty one million per post. In second, Selena Gomez with $800,000, followed by soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo with a $750,000. The rest of the top ten are in the images below: Hopper HQ uses internal and publicly available data to measure the potential amount certain celebrities and influencers can make by posting on the social media platform, taking into account how much a brand would pay for a post as well as the post’s value regarding account audience and engagement. For example, even though Selena Gomez has more followers than Jenner, her potential isn’t as high. Kylie Jenner was recently on the cover of Forbes magazine, highlighting her achievements and the fact that she could soon be, at age 21, the youngest-ever self-made billionaire. So you know, her landing at the top of the list is almost expected.
