Editing portraits in Adobe Lightroom is both rewarding and fun; Lightroom is fundamentally different to other editing software in that it involves a totally non-destructive workflow. This means that when you digitally poke someone in the face to make an edit in Lightroom, the actual photo file is never altered. Instead, as... 6/29/2017
I was one of those kids who had an answer for everything. I had answers about answers.
It wasn’t cute. It wasn’t endearing.
In fact, I can’t tell you how many times my mother gripped the steering wheel, turned to look to the back seat, and said through gritted teeth, “I need you to stop talking right NOW, Jasmine.”
Once I even got kicked out of church Sunday School because I corrected the teacher too many times regarding his Biblical references. (But, really, who gets kicked out of Sunday School?! THIS girl.)
Despite my flaws, I usually won people over because of my ability to express gratitude.
I’d write letters, leave messages of appreciation on answering machines (#childofthe90s), and run up to people with a bear hug and a Thank You in tow.
To this day, my flaws abound, but an attitude of gratitude covers an abundance of annoyances.
I’m thankful for grace.
I’m thankful for support.
I’m thankful for a pat on the back.
But here’s the deal: it doesn’t stop with me. Just because I feel thankful, doesn’t mean that those around me know I’m thankful.
And that’s where many of us get tripped up, right? Like, WHY CAN’T PEOPLE READ MY MIND??
What we need to do is express gratitude, but finding the right words is hard, I get it. But I’m here to help.
I’ve included a Note of Appreciation in this post for you to simply copy and paste, or use it as a point of inspiration to send your own. You can send it to your parent, child, partner, boss, employee, neighbor, friend, or sibling. Basically, anyone you know needs to hear from you.
Dear ___________ (name of recipient), this note has been a long time coming. I should’ve said it a thousand times before, but I hope you know how much I appreciate you. I can’t express how much it means when you __________________ (bring me coffee every morning/ensure I take my vitamins/proofread my emails/etc.). Your _________ (help/guidance/support) makes me happy as I pursue what I love. But I couldn’t do it without you. I want you to know that. And I want to say THANK YOU for being the best ____________ (spouse/mentor/parent/child/etc.) I could ask for.
I hope you use this note. Don’t delay. Send it today. Like, right now.
There’s a person who needs to hear from you.
via RSSMix.com Mix ID 8230553 http://ift.tt/2toDIij For the sake of convenience, technology has crept its way into pretty much every aspect of our daily lives. This includes directions, communication and, of course, sex. Porn is, in no way, a dying business, and if I had to guess, it never will be. People will always have a sex drive and as long as they do, porn is profitable and advancements are necessary. PornHub has now launched an interactive tab on its website. In PornHub’s words, the feature is “optimized to provide the most interactive, immersive porn experience.” As of right now, the interactive videos can only connect to the Fleshlight Launch and the Kiiroo Onyx, and the devices must be linked to videos through an app called “Feel Connect.” via PornHub via PornHub The hole in the plan right now, however, is that both of these devices pretty much only cater to men. PornHub has replied to this criticism by promising they are working toward both a wider range of toys that women can benefit from and even VR videos. The devices aimed toward women that could potentially be linked to interactive porn include the OhMiBod, WeVibe, Lovense and Kiiroo. PornHub has partnered with Ufeel.tv, company that already provides similar services, to produce the videos and to learn Ufeel’s techniques on how to sync the videos to the sex toys. According to Engadget, the companies have assured customers that the interactive tab will launch with hundreds of clips and at least five new videos every single day. Ultimately, the success of this feature relies on how wide of a demographic PornHub can reach, as well as the variety of video types and range of sex toys compatible with this technology. [via Engadget] via RSSMix.com Mix ID 8230553 http://ift.tt/2tlF0tT “A picture worths a thousand words,” is not a cliche to photographers Katarzyna Owczarek and Marcin Owczarek. It carries a deeper meaning, which is profoundly reflected in their work. Katarzyna and Marcin are a married couple who started working together in 2016. As fine art photographers, they tell stories based on surrealism. In their new series, “My Heart is An Animal,” they let viewers interpret their work based on their own life experiences. By communicating in surreal language, viewers are able to interpret each story differently, as this particular series highlights the connection between humans, animals and how they affect society and nature. We spoke with Katarzyna and Marcin to discuss fine art photography and learn more about the surrealism in their work. Can you describe the connection you’ve cultivated between surrealism and photography, as well as how you initially got started in this category of photography? Marcin: As far as I remember I didn’t start with photography. At the age of 17, I created my first paper-collage called ‘Requiem.’ Since that moment I tried to find the best medium to express myself. Primitively I used scissors, glue, and paper. Later, that wasn’t enough and the possibilities of creation for me were too narrow. In this way, I discovered photography and Photoshop. Subsequently, I started to connect collage and photography. In the beginning, I used to photograph every single element I needed in creation: buildings, monuments, animals. By using both methods, I developed in photography and started to create digital art, as well as mixed media art. All in all, I’ve been doing this for 14 years. In 2016, I decided to try something new, a different kind of photography, by limiting the level of manipulation and focuses more on the photography itself. In this way, we invented our current series ‘My Heart is An Animal,’ which combines photography in more traditional way, concept and storytelling. Katarzyna: Our project is mysterious, surreal and has emotional vigor. To sum it up, our series are based on the poetics of surrealism, because surrealism makes visible the invisible and transgresses the traditional bounds of reality. Our minds work in a similar way—we feel comfortable in this kind of universe, so we decided to inhabit there and invite art lovers to visit us. Can you walk me through the process of shooting your new series, ‘My Heart is An Animal’? Marcin: The main inspiration behind the series is the relationship between human beings and animals. We wanted to stress the fact that we often forget how deep the connection is between animal, the natural world, and Mother Earth, and how we do not treat this kind of connection in a proper way. Animals are being abused, some species are close to extinction. By linking human and animal elements we want to say: we are all, one living organism and we should respect each other. When we use the animal mask and human body it also means that we share all these aspects of existence. In addition, our inspiration was our state of mind and the particular way we observe the world. This series satellites around allegories, archetypes, symbols, and myths which are always up-to-date. The pictures have metaphorical and symbolic connotations. Using animal heads as a symbol and referring to instincts might be interpreted on many different levels. Symbols have many deep dimensions, they are stronger than passing time. Our human-animal instincts are simply universal and will be visible as long as this world exists. Katarzyna: Moreover, when new concepts and impulse for creation appears (sometimes unexpectedly), we summarize it in a few sentences and make sketches in our notebook. This process is simply a conceptual part. In our case, to create a final picture (finished artwork), we also need to set off for the trip and find the best place that’s most visually attractive. You explained this series mainly deals with the relationship between human and nature with a strong emphasis on animals. Can you tell more about how this relationship interests you? Katarzyna: One of the most fascinating facts, regarding the relationship between animals and man, is how deeply we are connected with the animal and natural world. In our view, people simply start to forget about these connections. We do not live in coexistence—a man tries to force nature to fit the human scale and exploit it. Man wants to shape nature to his will. For some people, it might sound naive, but we believe we are all “children of the Earth” and every soul has the same right to be respected. The relationship between man and animal, such as dog, for example, can be emotionally powerful. We think everyone whose ever had a dog for many years can say something about this. We are interested in the polarity between man and animal, and it shows up in our work. You also mentioned that animals sometimes show human emotions. What emotions/feelings do you think man and animal have in common? In what ways does this build a relationship? Marcin: Man and animals share in common many aspects. To start: people resemble animals and animals resemble humans (emotionally, physiognomically). We share the same set of needs—we need nourishment, we need to procreate to keep the species alive, we need to be loved and understood, we need warmth and shelter, we are all limited by mortal body, etc. They feel pain and they have memory. Animals as humans can live in groups, protect and help each other, have their own languages to communicate. Animals struggle with the same concerns as any modern man. All of these mentioned factors make the animals similar to us in many aspects and build a relationship between us and them. How much of yourself do you insert into you work vs. your subjects? Katarzyna: To be honest we completely identify ourselves with the subjects of our works, and our works are also contributing to “Animal Rights.” We create art and photography through all our senses, emotions and interaction with the living world. To wrap up this up, I’m wondering what you have planned for the future? Marcin: We have a couple of new sketches, so new works will be revealed soon for sure. I can already say that two of our next works will be called ‘The Song of the Sea’ and ‘Who Am I.’ Now we’re just looking for the proper visual atmosphere and landscape. Katarzyna: ‘My Heart is an Animal’ is an open-ended project, which we constantly develop. We also intend to create few sculptures which will correspond with our project, which we hope to achieve in 2018. See more images from the series below and visit Katarzyna and Marcin Owzarek’s website for more of their work.
via RSSMix.com Mix ID 8230553 http://ift.tt/2t12vGw Capturing a story worth telling in a relatively short video isn’t an easy task, but when done right it can have significant impact. These short films document everything from personal hardships to bizarre museums, and they do so in a way that makes them worth watching. Here are eight profound documentary-style short films on Vimeo. 1. Made In Iowa
“Made In Iowa” is one of Vimeo’s staff picks right now, and for good reason. The documentary-style short film captures life in a small Iowa town called Webster City. After the factory in town that employed most of its residents closed down, hard times ensued. Rock bottom, however, was the local movie theater closing down. This 12-minute video depicts the people of Webster City pulling together to preserve the theater and ultimately rebuild their town’s economy. This heartfelt short film encapsulates small-town life in a unique, intimate way. 2. The Residue of a Relationship
Breakups, at this point, are kind of a tired topic. While relevant to most people’s lives at one point or another, they’ve been beaten to death in the art world. It really takes a fresh approach and a new perspective to create something based on heartbreak, but “The Residue of a Relationship” does just that. 3. In the Hollow“In the Hollow” recounts the murder of Rebecca Wight while hiking the Appalachian Trail with her girlfriend Claudia Brenner. The film uses a typical crime-show style that intertwines a re-enactment of the crime with the victim giving a detailed story of what happened. Although sometimes the style can come off cheesy and forced, “In the Hollow” does it well. Brenner revisits the site where mountain-man Stephen Roy Carr shot her and killed her girlfriend, which adds a raw emotional aspect to the film. 4. Inside the Museum of FailureNBC Left Field produced this short film that features the Museum of Failure in Sweden and its curator, Samuel West. The short film shows a variety of failed innovations, and West discusses how important he thinks it is to highlight and acknowledge failure. 5. Home Movies“Home Movies” is an extremely powerful one-minute short film that showcases different gay men in a home movie format. Although very short, the film captures a wide range of emotions and attitudes toward homosexuality. It entices the audience to empathize with not only the characters in the video but the gay community in general. 6. Home MoviesLeo and Laura are two 90-year-olds who have been married for 69 years. They spent their young years traveling the world together, but in old age they aren’t physically able to anymore. Through VR they get to, in a sense, revisit the places they traveled to years ago. The film is, in the words of one of the Vimeo commenters, “delicate and genuine.” 7. Shaving for BeginnersOf all of the short films on this list, this one has an unimaginable ability to tap into the audience’s tear ducts. Ty Moore’s experiences in the Marines and his family’s trials and tribulations led to the significance he places on the act of shaving. The film’s approach to telling this family’s story is beautiful and heart wrenching. 8. The Legacy of Paranoid ThrillersWhile more dry and informative than the other documentaries featured, this short film is just as engaging and unexpectedly interesting. Travis Lee Ratcliff, the filmmaker, explores the parallels between the political climate and paranoid/conspiracy thrillers. The film points out how pervasive paranoia is throughout the U.S. regarding government and how those attitudes are reflected through movies. via RSSMix.com Mix ID 8230553 http://ift.tt/2sR79sd
You guys love your cats! We’ve already seen your dogs so for last week’s #ThursdayTheme we asked to see your stunning cats – thank you to everyone who shared an image with us.
We chose this little beauty to be our #FridayFoto. It was lovingly captured by Jodie Waite.
Here’s what Julie had to say about Jodie’s’s image: “A cat with such elegance and good looks deserves to be photographed in ways that showcase this. And that’s exactly what Jodie has managed to do.

They also announced their acquisition of Veed.me, a service for connecting people and companies with videographers. With a past full of somewhat cringe-worthy pranks and stunts routed through Fiverr, the company said they decided to take steps toward higher quality professionalism. “The Fiverr marketplace has always solved the biggest pain point freelancers have: getting clients and generating income,” said Fiverr CEO Micha Kaufman. “As our marketplace has evolved, we’ve recognized the growing demand from entrepreneurs for bigger and more complex projects that sometimes need highly professional freelancers with years of experience. Through Fiverr Pro, we’re bringing professional freelancers an easy way to get work, while adding the high-end, trusted talent entrepreneurs are struggling to tap into.” The Pro feature will put a star on certain freelancers’ pages on Fiverr deemed as producing high-quality content. The company vets freelancers and will be adding well-known figures such as Elliot Tebele, also known as the infamous @FuckJerry. Writing and translation, graphics and design, digital marketing and video and animation are all the services that will be provided through Fiverr Pro. For freelancers to receive Pro status they have to first apply for accreditation through Fiverr, at which point they review the user to make sure they meet the criteria for Fiverr Pro. Tebele specifically will be offering digital services ranging everywhere from meme creation to Facebook ads and Instagram videos. “We’re an organization that’s always thrived on creativity, and while we engage with tens of millions on a daily basis to spread that creativity, we were also looking for the right opportunity to do it on behalf of a broader audience of businesses in a scalable way,” said Jonathan Horowitz, JerryMedia’s head of business development, in a Fiverr statement. “Working with Fiverr allows us to enable access to our team of world-class creatives in a way that’s never existed, and we’re excited to see how it evolves.” [via Entrepreneur] via RSSMix.com Mix ID 8230553 http://ift.tt/2seq5T5 Brooklyn Beckham, 18-year-old son of retired soccer star, David Beckham and former Spice Girl, Victoria Beckham, has recently taken his “amateur” photography to print. Penguin Random House UK is set to release Beckham’s photo book title, What I see, on June 29, and art critics are already getting their dirty words out there about this young artist’s first publication. Criticism of Beckman first struck back in 2016, when he shot an ad campaign for fashion/beauty company Burberry. Professional photographer Chris Floyd called out Beckham for not earning is fame, claiming it was handed to him because of the family he was born into. “I carry a camera around with me absolutely everywhere so I don’t miss a potential photographic moment. Having said that, I don’t love being photographed myself. I accept it because I have grown up with it,” he said to Sky News.
With over 10 million followers on Instagram, Beckham has created a lot of artistic exposure for himself, and it’s no wonder why a publishing company wants to take a chance on reaching that audience. The publication, which is set to display 300 photos, is said to tell a story—not just photos slapped down in a scrapbook. “Each chapter tells a different story through pictures by and of Brooklyn, accompanied by captions and passages of text in his own words,” proclaims the book description. Nonetheless, “serious” artists aren’t taking Beckham so seriously. i newspaper Arts Editor Alice Jones, for example, left a rather sarcastic review: “Huge fan of Brooklyn Beckham’s terrible photographs and even worse captions,” she wrote. But Managing Director of Penguin Random House Children’s, Francesca Dow, on the other hand, hopes that people will see the publication for what it’s meant to stand for. “What I See is a book for teenagers, by a teenager, which gives Brooklyn’s fans broader insight into his world seen through his unique and creative perspective,” she told The Independent.
What do you think? Does Beckham’s background give him an unfair advantage as a photographer? Or, is his family’s celebrity status preventing his work from being seen from an unbiased perspective? Beckham will be showcasing the original photos from the book at Christie’s London in Mayfair on June 27. Each photo will be available for purchase and proceeds are set to benefit the children of the Grenfell Tower fire.
